Tragedy: A Gun Violence Story
IF ONLY WE KNEW WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH HIS HEAD, THEN COULD WE HAVE STOPPED IT?
20 lives were lost on April, 26 al Living Town High school. 17 kids and 3 teachers. A day that was supposed to be filled with learning, laughs, and smiles. Is now filled with mourning, tears, and screams. And I Mila Becker, am one of those people. I am here to tell you my story on what happened on this fatal day. A fatal day on where 20 innocent lives were taken away.
7:30 a.m. 5 hours before the shooting
"Mila! Mila wake up or you're going to be late!" My mom says through the door.
If only I had stayed home. If only...If only.
"I'm up, I'm up!" I say yawning.
I hurry up and brush my teeth and put on my favorite blue and white striped shirt and some ripped short jean pants. Then my phone went off. It was a text from my best friend Rose. She was among the people who had lost their lives.
"Are you ready? I've been outside for the past 10 min." The text said.
After I read the text, I ran out of my room, grabbed my blue book bag, grabbed a granola bar. Before I left I said goodbye to my mom, dad, and little sister Sia.
"Took you long enough. I started to grow white hair." Rose laughed.
She was in her gray 2011 Hyundai Elentra. Her music blasting. She wore a red shirt and ripped jeans. She put her red hair in a bun. How in a matter of hours, this sweet and amazing girl would be gone. "Shut up. Come on we're going to be late for school." I say laughing.
8:15 a.m. 4 hours and 15 minutes before the shooting.
Me and Rose pull up to the school. As we get out I see Mike Parker. Another life that would soon be taken away.
"Hey! Mila! Rose!" Mike yelled. "What did you get on your test for Mr. Walter's class?"
"Oh, hey Mike. I got a 100 percent on it." I said with a smile. Mike had blonde hair and brown eyes. He wore a blue sweater and jeans with Nike's on, that would soon be covered in his blood. "Not a surprise coming from you, Mila." Mike ans Rose said at the same time. After they said that, we all started laughing. What I didn't know is that, that would be the last laugh that we would share together. As we walked into the school, I see a student that was being bullied by people I didn't know. What I didn't know was that the guy being bullied would start all of this tragedy.
11:30 a.m. 1 hour before shooting
I was in Mr. Archer's math class. One of the teachers whose life would also be taken away.
"So who can tell us the answer to this equation?" Mr.Archer said happily.
I raised my hand with a sigh. "It's 5."
After I said that the bell rang and I gathered my stuff and went to Language Arts. It was so boring. It lasted for an hour and it was finally time for lunch; the time of the shooting.
12:30 p.m. The time of the shooting
It was lunch time a place filled with laughter, screams, and food. As I walked into the cafeteria the fire alarm went off. I thought it was a normal drill, but I was wrong. Dead wrong. As I walked out, I heard gun shots and screams. BANG! BANG! BANG! the sound of it made me cry because the thought of the bullets hitting someone and killing people I know hurt. What I didn't know was that Mike Parker, my friend would be the first one shot. Then it was Jane Smith and Sam Muller. As I was running my math teacher called my name and I ran into the classroom.
"What's going on?" A boy in the classroom said.
"I'm scared." A girl cried.
Then another gun shot went off. It was right in front of our classroom. What I didn't know was that it was my best friend Rose. Before she died she sent me a message and voicemail.
We spent about 20 minutes in that classroom and the shooter already took 17 kids lives and only 2 teachers. Just one more life that he would take, before it would all be over... this tragedy would all be over.
"I'm going to go check outside. I'll be right back." Mr. Archer said.
Before I could even say anything to stop him from leaving he was already gone. About 5 minutes since he left and then....BANG! That was the last person to die. The tragedy is now over. As I walked out of the classroom I saw that the shooter was being arrested and that he was the guy being bullied this morning. Then I ran down the hall and looked at my phone. It was a text and voicemail from Rose. As I called her I hear her ringtone go off. When I went to search for her, I saw that see was laying in a puddle of blood....Dead. Then I saw the body of Mike, Sam, and Jane. I started to cry because all the people I new....My friends were gone...Dead, by the hands of a gun.
IF ONLY WE KNEW WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH HIS HEAD, THEN COULD WE HAVE STOPPED IT?
"The tragedy of it all was that you knew you deserved better, but still stayed and died a little more each night like a slow motion suicide." (R.M Broderick)
